Vietnamese people often prefer to choose yellow ochna trees for worship and decoration of their houses for the New Year. The image of blooming yellow ochna trees on the first day of spring is a moral lesson for every person and every home. The yellow ochna trees under the sun and rain on the land of Vietnam are also typical images of the noble spiritual qualities of the Vietnamese people in their process of struggle and labor to build their lives over generations. Vietnam's golden yellow ochna tree occupy an important status in the Zen poems of the Lý Trần dynasty; it is a metaphorical, noble image for the human ability to receive the truth.

Yellow ochna trees are closely associated with the Vietnamese homeland and with people from the time when the ancestors found the land and established villages in which to live. The yellow ochna trees endure storms, wind, and floods so that they can bloom on the occasion of the New Year. This is a symbolic image of the Vietnamese people, who overcome all difficulties to preserve their homeland and lives meaningfully. The blossoming yellow ochna trees are rooted deep in the earth and do not fall due to wind or storms. It is the symbol of the Vietnamese people, who preserve their moral virtues and the beautiful cultural roots of their ancestors, wherever they may be in Vietnam. The yellow ochna trees faced with harsh weather still survive persistently over the years to cultivate its buds, like the Vietnamese people, who are patient and courageous in every situation as they build their lives, wherever they may be in Vietnam.Yellow ochna trees shed old leaves in the late winter, yielding to young shoots and yellow flowers in early spring. These trees are like the Vietnamese people, sacrificing for the future generations, wherever they live. The yellow ochna trees preserve the sap of deep life inside the body to create the healthy vitality for flowers to bloom early in the spring. They are like the Vietnamese people, who keep morality in their hearts and cultivate virtue for the sake of many, wherever they live.Yellow ochna trees live through the years under harsh weather and silently endure to give life to beautiful flowers in the spring. This image deserves to be a symbol of the patience and noble sacrifice of the ancestors in their process of working to build the homeland and maintain national cultural identity. Since the time of the founding and preservation of the country, the ancestors established a village regime focused on moral education. Each of the names of villages and provinces set by the ancestors has historical significance and always includes wishes for their descendants to live peacefully. Many villages in native Vietnam have temples, which from the earliest days played a role as religious schools teaching moral and common beliefs to the villagers. Throughout southern, central and northern Vietnam, every village has its own temple, shrine, altar, and communal house for worshipping ancestors and the meritorious heroes of the people and country. Every year, children, grandchildren, and people from the countryside who went to work or live elsewhere often return to their village to visit elderly parents and ancestors' graves, reconsider their genealogy, and review the teachings of their predecessors in order to express their gratitude and piety.  Yellow ochna trees in the temple courtyards of the countryside of Vietnam are considered an important image in the Buddhist literature of the Lý Trần dynasty. According to the wisdom of the saints, the image of yellow ochna trees thriving in the morning dew and sunshine and enduring through the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter is the miraculous power of life. It is worthy of symbolizing the state of a stainless mind and body in this life. Zen master Mãn Giác wrote the poem "Disclose Sickness to the Sangha" (Cáo tật thị chúng) with the image of a yellow ochna tree representing the transcendental spirit hidden in human ability. This is the capacity to live as a self-awakened and insightful person. That wisdom is the overall vision of all the ups and downs of life, overcoming all the constraints of time and space estimation in the phenomenal world. The poetic content is as follows: Spring passes, hundreds of flowers fall,Spring comes, hundreds of flowers laugh.Life issues run ahead,Oh! Old age on our head!Do not tell the end of spring, flowers falling off,Last night in the yard, a yellow ochna branch bloomed.

The first two lines mentions the time, scenery, and weather inherent in life. The next two lines are like a heartfelt thought about the coming and going involved in the short lives of human beings. All that takes place in the stages of life is always changing; all phenomena are in a state of birth, existence, change, and destruction. People are also subject to the law of birth, aging, sickness, and death. The ultimate happiness is to live with a sincere mind that is not crazy about all of the tempting phenomena of life. Throughout the year, whether poor or rich, difficult or convenient, life is just like this illusory scene.

The transcendental doctrine is contained in the meaning of the last two lines, “Do not tell the end of spring, flowers falling off, / Last night in the yard, a yellow ochna branch blossomed.” Do not think that at the end of spring, the flowers will all fall down: there is still a yellow ochna branch blooming. Even in the arising and passing of phenomena, there is also the mind without arising and passing. The branch of a yellow ochna is like a message to alert people who are living the impermanent life: the phenomena of old birth and death is inevitable in this life. Let us return to our pure immaculate mind and the ultimate truth of getting rid of all of the suffering of birth and death. The yellow ochna flower is a typical flower used for worship and decoration in homes during the Vietnamese New Year festival, and it also presents profound moral lessons for life. The New Year's branch is a metaphorical image for the vitality and wisdom of the Vietnamese people. Contemplate on yellow ochna branches to clearly realize the fine culture of the nation and thank our ancestors and homeland. Contemplate on the yellow ochna trees on the Vietnamese New Year holiday to penetrate the meaning of life. All phenomena accomplished by knowledge will eventually be eliminated by the law of arising and passing with time; return to the true mind without arising and passing to attain eternal happiness.
