AT HƯƠNG SEN TEMPLE

WELCOME!

Hương Sen Buddhist Temple is a Vietnamese-American Nunnery following the Pure Land-Zen Buddhist Sect. We learn Buddhist scriptures, practice meditation, and recite the Buddha’s name to lead a pure monastic life.

Life in society is sometimes hectic, chaotic, stressful and difficult. You need free time and a quiet place to balance your mind, nuture the Bodhi mind, progress into your spiritual potential and develop precept-samadhi-wisdom. We invite you to take refuge at Hương Sen Temple, a recluse nunnery. We're delighted to have you here and share in our simple quiet life of reading, research, chanting and practice, following the Buddha’s teaching.

By observing our orientation notes, website, live stream Facebook (daily streaming from Hương Sen Temple), we believe that you can do your best to fit into the temple culture and routine during your visit. When visiting Hương Sen Buddhist Temple, whether for a few days or a few weeks, it's good to remember that this semidesert place is simple, quiet, remote but unique. Your time in the temple will help you balance your mind and gain peace and insight day by day.

There are several tranquil Buddha statues in the large ten-acre Zen garden that is convenient for walking meditation and reading the Buddha’s name.

We have a Buddhist library with more than 5,000 books, including the Bảo Anh Lạc Bookshelf with forty-five works written, composed and translated by Venerable Abbess Dr. Bhikhuni Giới Hương. In addition, there are eleven Buddhist music albums from poems of the Abbess to help you gain a background in Buddhism.

We have a multipurpose main hall for meditation, chanting and other activities.

Please complete the registration form here to schedule a visit and study for a week or stay many days, depending on your situation.

There are no scheduled retreats at Huong Sen Temple. Instead, you may practice with us as we try to live a peaceful, pure, mindful life with the Buddha's teaching, self-practice, self-effort and separate from the noisy world.

Since this is a Pure Land-Zen temple for studying Buddhism, the daily 

schedule of the temple is to provide the maximum time for you to read the scriptures in the temple library, meditate on your own, and recite the Buddha's name by yourself. You can join us the morning and evening chanting, as well as walking meditation as you wish. The rest of time you are free to practice on your own in your room or main hall.

7:00–8:00 am              Walking meditation with the Abbess (listening to the birds sing, wind blowing, fresh air and sunrise on the mountain)

8:00 am                       Volunteer work (vacuum, sweep, clean . . .), read or study in the library or self practice

11:30 am                     Vegetarian lunch ritual (assist with lunch preparation and cleanup post-meal)

12:30 pm                     Rest period

2:00 pm                       Wake up and self practice

4:00 pm                      Afternoon chanting

6:00 pm                       Vegetarian dinner (self service)

7:00-8:00 pm                Evening chanting

9:00 am every Sunday: Chanting, meditation and reading Amitābha Buddha’s name

THE MAIN HALL WITH MULTIPURPOSES

The 3,000 square foot main hall (under contruction) has many purposes –meditation, chanting, lecture hall, and so on. You are welcome to meditate or recite here or in your room at any time.

THE LIBRARY

The library has two separate departments: Vietnamese and English. It includes the Bảo Anh Lạc Bookshelf where there are forty-five works written, composed and translated by Venerable Abbess Dr. Bhikhuni Giới Hương. There are eleven Buddhist music albums from poems written by the Abbess. The library is on the right of the main hall and is under contruction. It is open from 8am–8pm; feel free to read and study there.

Visitors can borrow any book and take it home. There is a notebook to write your name, the book name, your address (cellphone and email) and the date you are checking out and the date you will return it.

OFFICE

Next to the kitchen is the office with computer, printer, ink, papers and other supplies. It is for the use of the temple. Please don't use without asking permission.

PHOTOGRAPHS
We often take photos, video or livestream facebook of our visitors with us in the practice and activities to post our website, newsletters, Facebook, YouTube or other materials to introduce our activities at Hương Sen Temple to the devotees. If you do not want to be included in these photos, please let us know. You are invited to take photos of the temple and nuns for your reseach or memory.

WHAT TO BRING

You can bring your personal sheets, pillowcase, blanket, sleeping bag, cushion, flashlight and sport shoes, (for walking medition.) If not, the temple will provide.

SAFETY
Our land is semidesert with very dry air and soil (especially in the summer). Please keep all doors closed at all times because there are small wild animals, such as rattlesnakes, squirrels, lizards and bobcats, rabbits, rodents, scorpions and bees, among others. Please call 911 if you are bitten.

DONATIONS

Hương Sen Temple is a nonprofit organization formed to share the Buddha’s teachings for the sake of many. To run smoothly, it is based entirely on the generous donations of devotees. Your stay is without charge; it depends on your ability to donate to maintain the temple’s activities. Your donation is a tax exemption (the temple is a registered 501c-3, non-profit ID: 37-1605292_. Venerable Abbess Bhikkhuni Giới Hương

INTRODUCTION OF HUONG SEN TEMPLE

ORIGIN

Hương Sen Buddhist Temple is located in Perris, California, on ten acres of semidesert in the southern part of the state. Established in April 2010 by Venerable Abbess Dr. Bhikṣuṇī  Giới Hương, it was approved as a US-based 501 (c) (3) nonprofit religious organization on June 13, 2011. Currently there are four Bhikkhunīs and the Venerable Abbess in residence, along with three dog disciples (Rosie, Bruno, and Rudy).

This is a Pure Land-Zen (Thiền, Chan, or meditation) nunnery following the Mahāyāna Buddhist tradition for women dedicated to living the Buddha's teachings. It shares the same Dharma roots under the guidance of Late Master Venerable Bhikkhunī Hải Triều Âm at Hương Sen Temple, Đại Ninh, Lâm Đồng, Việt Nam and Hương Sen Temple, Bình Chánh, HCM City, Việt Nam.

MISSION

Hương Sen Buddhist Temple is an educational religious center for understanding Buddhism and Buddhist practices. It is built to disseminate the Respectful Honored Buddha's teachings by providing a simple quiet spacious place for residents, local as well as visiting nuns (female monastics) and devoted lay disciples to study the Buddha's discourses, research Asian (Vietnamese) culture, practice meditation, worship, chant the penitential ritual, share the Dharma, attend retreats and assemblies for the Amitābha Buddha’s name recitation and guidance for attaining the Buddha’s nature on the basis of Theravāda and Mahāyāna sūtras.

WHAT WE DO

  • We provide spiritual dialogue, counseling,teaching, and guide lay practitioners and monastics on how to observe precepts-samadhi-wisdom to maintain and develop peace, compassion, joy and happiness in themselves. 
  • We perform rituals and offer retreats tointegrate the Dhamma into life to meet the spiritual needs of disciples.
  • Weintroduce and guide the Dharma of Sakyamuni Buddha from 2,600 years ago in India to local students and Americans in thesemodern times. All people are welcome, regardless of religion or race. We do not try to convert anyone. What we do is based on your understanding, requests and support. 
  • We nurture and encourage aspiringfemale practitioners to be ordained as they wish and provide the conditions (food, shelter, scripture, robes) so they can live a liberated pure Bhikkhunī life on the basis of the Buddhist Vinaya.
  • We support and uphold the connection and growthof the international Bhikkhunī Sangha (Theravāda, Vajrayāna and Mahāyāna) inpracticing, preserving and sharing the Buddha’s teachings from different perspectives in a multicultural environment.
  • We strongly foster the development of the Bhikkhunī sangha as international Buddhist community leaders and Dharma masters.

Biography of Ven. Dr. Giới Hương & Bao Anh Lac Bookshelf

Dr. Bhikṣuṇī  Giới Hương (world name Śūnyatā Phạm) was born in 1963 in Bình Tuy, Vietnam and ordained at the age of fifteen under the great master, the Most Venerable Bhikkhunī Hải Triều Âm. In 1994, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Literature from Sài Gòn University. She studied in India for ten years and in 2003, graduated with a PhD in Buddhist Philosophy from the University of Delhi, India. In 2005, she settled down in the United States and in 2015, she earned a second Bachelor's Degree in Literature at the University of Riverside, California.

Currently, she is pursuing a degree in the Master of Arts Program at the University of California, Riverside and works as a lecturer at the Vietnam Buddhist University in HCM City. She favors quietly reflecting on Dharma, and that leads her to write, as well as translate, Buddhist books and lyrics for music albums on her Bảo Anh Lạc Bookshelf. 

In 2000, she established Hương Sen Temple, Bình Chánh, Sài Gòn, Việt Nam.In 2010, she founded HươngSen Temple in Perris, California, USA, where she serves as abbess.
