Until the beginning of the 11th century, under the Lý, the Đại Việt, we, had
Venerable Bhikkhunī Diệu Nhân, who was originally from the royal family,
talented perfect and since then more than 1,000 years ago history, the nuns' lineage
in Vietnam has still continued to this day. At the end of the twentieth century in
Vietnam, we have Venerable Bhikkhunī Như Thanh, Venerable Bhikkhunī Diệu
Không, Venerable Bhikkhunī Hải Triều Âm, Venerable Bhikkhunī Trí Hải, etc.
who were famous at talent and virtue both inside and outside the country. They
translated works, annotations, composed the poems and books related to Buddhism
as well as the issue of converting nuns and lay people.
Since the 1950s onwards the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha sent monks and nuns to
abroad study in India, Japan, Sri Lanka, etc., so some nuns have also played a role
in keeping preserving our religion by receiving the renunciates, building pagodas,
organizing the retreat for lay people, providing the ordinations of Samanera,
Samaneri, Śikṣamāṇā, and Bhikkhunī for Vietnamese as well as foreigners.
