DONATION FOR

BUILDING THE TỨ ÂN STUPA TO WORSHIP

THE LATE MOST VENERABLE HẢI TRIỀU ÂM RELICS & OTHERS

The Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm (1920-2013) has both bloods of French-Vietnam, Vietnamese name: Nguyễn Thị Ni, French name: Ơ Gien Ni Ca ta lan (Eugenie Catallan), was born in Hà Đông Province, Hà Nội. Her father's name: Ê liên Catalan (Eliene Catallan), a French civil servant. Her mother's name: Nguyễn Thị Đắc, a Vietnamese physician. The Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm was born in a good moral family on the strict basis of Asian traditional life. She also absorbed the liberal polite manner from Western culture. She was one of the few women who lived in the French colonial period and earned a degree Diplome D’étude Primaire Supérieur. Miss Eugénie became a role model in taking the teaching as her main career.

With a compassionate heart, she always cared for the unfortunate lives embroiled in poverty, disease, and suffering. With the large intellectual of the two Eastern-Western knowledges, Miss Catallan Nguyễn Thị Ni was often engaged in charity work to help and comfort these unfortunate people. In Hà Nội and Hải Phòng, she also was one of the founders and developers of many Buddhist Youth Associations which was often called Phật Hóa Phổ Buddhist Youth Association at the time. She often wrote articles for the Bodhi News of the Most Venerable Thích Tuệ Nhuận with her pen name Cát Tường Lan, brought practical Buddhist ideas to transform young people’s thoughts between the periods of Confucianism and Westernizm.

Then one day, after listening to the Most Venerable Thích Tuệ Nhuận’s lecture on the Avalokiteśvara Bodddhisattva and Mahāsthāmaprāpta Boddhisattva Chapters in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra at Quán Xứ temple, Miss Catallan Nguyễn thị Ni suddenly realized the wonderful ideas of the Dharma. She was taken refuge by the Sangha Leader Thích Mật Ứng who granted her the Buddhist name of Hải Triều Âm. In 1949, at the age of 29-year-old, she was ordained under the most Venerable Thích Đức Nhuận at Đồng Đắc Pagoda.

In 1952, obeying the Master’s words, she moved to the South joining the Dược Sư Nunnery, Gia định, Saigòn, founded by the Most Venerable Thích Thiện Hoa. She studied under the guidance of the famous contemporary masters, especially Most Venerable Thích Thiện Hoa. There, she learnt precepts, cared for her sick mother, taught Buddhist lessons to the Buddhists, and at the same time, practiced the four foundations of mindfulness (sa. smṛtyupasthāna; P: satipaṭṭhāna) to gain the insight and especially was interested in Śūraṅgama Sūtra to experience the super knowledge of Buddha.

In 1962, after her mother passed away, to show her sincere piety, she spent five whole years in recluse with the aim to gain the Samādhi of the Reading Buddha Name. In 1968, following the example of Master Huệ Viễn, Most Venerable Thích Thiền Tâm opened the Pure Land association in Phú An, Đức Trọng, Lâm Đồng, invited the Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm  and other nuns to establish Hoa Sen Association. There she retreated and dedicated whole her mind to recite the Buddha's name at Linh Quang Pagoda.

In 1970, the Most Venerable Thích Thanh Từ opened a 3-year meditation course at Chơn Không Zen Center, Vũng Tàu. The Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm was one of the first 10 students to be recruited. There, she realized the ideal of "Reflect at illusion, it will disappear. This is the meaning of four foundations of mindfulness.” Her strong practical point was the method of “the perfect penetrated hearing organ” which is combined with the Bright Samādhi of the Reading Buddha Name.

She strictly observed the precepts without keeping money, eating food after noon, upheld charity, donate for print scriptures, specially translated and composed around 100 books (on how to focus the inner mind detaching totally the outer world objects) but she remained anonymous except in mention by her disciples’ names as the authors or translators. She made a hundred hard long Mahayana Sutras, treatises, and precepts to simply summarize for being easier to readers. She had the big number of disciples, up to around a thousand nuns and few thousands lay disciples (As my knowledge, she is a great master who has the biggest number of nun disciples in this century). She founded nine sanctuaries to enough place for nuns living such as Ni Liên, Linh Quang, Liên Hoa, Viên Thông, Hương Sen, Dược Sư, Lăng Nghiêm, Bát Nhã, and Dược Sư Temples.

In regard to her nun disciples, she strictly requested them to consider Eight Respected Rules as the humble frame, the four foundations of mindfulness as the practiced method, and reciting the Buddha's name as the key to cultivate. Every season, she also often taught nuns the important sutras such as the Flower Garland Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, the Heart Sutra, Amitabha Sutra, Lankavatara Sutra etc. to nurture Buddha’s seed in them. Her virtue, compassion, and wisdom came to be wide known far and near.

The Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm who is a role model for the post-nuns, was devoted in serving and respect the Buddha - Dharma - Sangha, wholeheartedly obeyed the Buddha's teaching, studied the Dharma, and spread Buddhism in a simple way. For monks and nuns, she was humble and respectful, always taught her disciples to keep Eight Respected Laws, live harmoniously, maintain the proper female manners, observe strictly the Bhikkhuni-Sila, and considered the Precept-concentration-wisdom as their main career.

She peacefully passed away at 11:56pm on June 24th, the year of Precious Snake i.e. July 31st 2013, her world age: 94 year-old while her Buddhist age: 60 year-old.

Many wonderful things caming at her death time:

Before passing away, she told her disciples that after 24 hours she stopped breathing, they could inform the public about this sad news, and in accordance with her words, all nun disciples noticed the first miracles as following:

After 24 hours, her body was still soft. Her face is still ruddy, gentle and refreshed as the same way as she was alive.

Another wonderful thing is that during the first six days, after her death, on the top of stupa, there appeared a bright aura in front of the witness of all Venerable monks, nuns, and laymen who came from all over the world to the temple to attend her funeral. A brilliant five-colored circle spreads in the center with the bright sunlight around.

On the day putting her body to the stupa, a beautiful white lotus flower is appeared in the aura too. When learning this phenomenon, it was known that before she passed away, she told her disciples about these good signs. On the other hand, on the Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva Day (April 4th the year of Precious Snake i.e. May 13rd  2013), is also the 60th ordination anniversary of the Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm, there was an beautiful aura appearing brilliantly on the stupa peak lasting for 4 hours (from 8 am to 12 noon).

Before her death, the disciples asked the Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm and she replied that she had seen Amitābha Buddha, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, and Samantabhadra Bodhisattva with a great number of saints who would come to welcome her spirit.

The disciple asked: - When will the master go to follow the Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva?

She answered: - Go now, don't wait.

Question: - Besides Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, are there anyone else there?

Answer: - There are many.

Q: -Do you see Amitābha Buddha come to receive you?

A: - Yes.

Q: Amitābha Buddha came to pick you up, what color cloth does he wear?

A: - A white long dress.

During seven days after the funeral, the pretty aura appeared on the sky every week. Particularly in the fourth week, in addition to the aura, there was a five-color cloud appearing beside the white clouds in the sky.

All of these good phenomena were known beforehand and were written down by her handwriting in July 6th 2009.

She also advised her disciples: - Whenever all of you remember me, just walk around the stupa, meditate at the stupa, recite Buddha's name, and contemplate the Buddha's teaching to increase your Bodhi mind.

Her merits on relieving suffering for animal were immeasurable. Wherever she went and met them, she did not forget to give refuge, and free their life from the animal poachers. She was compassionate, gentle and provided comfort equally to everyone without distinguishing young, elder, men and women, close, or strange. She reminded everyone that: "You can follow any Buddhist school, but it must be important to realize the Buddha nature, then you can be able become Buddhas."

Venerable Thích Nữ Giới Hương is one of hundreds of her disciples, established Hương Sen Temple (as the name of Hương Sen Temple originally in Đại Ninh) in Perris, California (it is far about an hour drive from Phước Lộc Thọ, Little Sàigòn).

In October 2016, Ven. Thích Nữ Giới Hương and several nuns (Venerable Hạnh Quang, Ven. Bồ Đề, Rev. Viên Tiến, Rev. Viên Quang, Rev. Viên Nhuận and Mom of Rev. Viên Quang) from Sài Gòn came to visit Linh Quang, Liên Hoa, Hương Sen, Dược Sư, and Dược Sư Temples, to specially pray and walk around the Master Hải Triều Âm. Venerable TN Vĩnh Lạc, the abbess of Dược Sư Temple, offered Ven. Thích Nữ Giới Hương the Master’s a meal bowl and hair relics (shining five colors under sunny light for those have the good occasion) to worship at Hương Sen Temple in USA, so that this abroad place can be associated with her virtue and compassion.

Now, it would have been better if Hương Sen Temple has a stupa to worship the Master’s most valuable relics and the ashes of clergy and Buddhists. This is a merit field for Buddhists to earn the great cause with the great Master - who was a virtuous senior nun, has devoted her whole life for the cause of liberation, helping other beings to be liberated and spread Buddhism in a simple way. Donation in building the stupa, we will more or less gain the following tenets:

  • Stop the suffering causes in the six realms.
  • Approach the good occasion to be endowed with the Master’s virtue.
  • Direct contact with the compassionate and insight emanating from her relics.
  • Pay homage at her relics to increase the belief that whenever we wholemind recite the Buddha's name, keep purity, and spiritual practice, then after death, there will be the relics left behind for the world. This is the crystallization of the essence of the enlightened one. The purity of the moral monks or nuns can appear in the holy form of relics.

THE VIRTUES OF THE MOST VENERABLE HẢI TRIỀU ÂM

Every day, from morning to noon, from noon to afternoon, the Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm taught Dharma for nuns and sincerely showed the right or wrong so that her nun disciples could penetrate the awakened experience. Her words were practical, simple to understand and matched with every level.

  • She was humble, simple, and honest, but strictly directed the mass to the precept framework. She was straight to punish whoever was bad or broke the rules and also willing to forgive their errors. She devotedly trained her nuns to be Dharma masters with strong spiritual powers.
  • She was always devoted for the nun sangha from spiritual to material, sacrificing the time and health (from this temporary life) for the sake of many. Throughout day and night, she did not rest at all in her duty of self-awareness and other-awareness
  • Her example of selflessness to serve sangha, people and animal, no words can describe, and was imprinted deeply in the mind of the nuns and others never to be forgotten.
  • Hundreds of nuns from everywhere gathered to study under her guidance so that it became too crowded, she had to remodel her bathroom to use as her bed and workplace and yield her room for nuns. This was so like her to offer this sacrifice.
  • In the cold winter days in the highlands, people are anxious to find their own comfort. But to her, she gave her warm blankets to all her nun disciples, she used a rough quilt (a warm bed covering made of padding enclosed between layers of fabric and kept in place by lines of stitching,) that was heavy and did not provide enough warmth.

When she noticed that the latter nun generation had low levels, she summarized the hard and long scriptures such an the Flower Garland (Avataṃsaka Sūtra), the Heart Sūtra (Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya), Śūraṃgama-samādhi-sūtra, the Lotus Sūtra (saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra), the Law of Bhikkhuni, etc. to be short and simple to help nuns who can learn and understand the essence of the Buddha’s teachings. As an awakened nun who did not care about fame, she kept her anonymity in books which were composed or translated by her. Instead she only wrote the names of her disciples in them.

  • She often reminded the nun disciples who should be diligent in their spiritual practice to repay their benefactors; they must live a simple life to save every grain of rice, wear a rudimentary cloth, avoid the waste the belongings of the Three Jewels, and must preserve them as protection their eyes.

She was careful to earn a tiny merit in each small action. For example, she was 70 years-old, still washed her own clothes, self-prepared her bed, not bothered to an attendant and up to the year of 80 or 94 years old, because of old age and sickness, she agreed to let her disciples help.

  • She rarely showed the sadness, hopeless or fatigue at anyone one, instead of she was always smiled, gentle and graciously tolerated. Whoever came close to her, felt or received immediately the compassionate strength from her, which makes all defilements dissipated (this is one of the reasons why hundreds nuns came to her to study, even though she was reclused in the remote area of Đại Ninh, Lâm Đồng.)
  • Because she had realized the truth that "All beings have Buddha nature", so the animal dogs, cat, hen, tiny insects (as worm, ant, fish), ghost, human or sentient beings, whom she met, she gave them refuge, gave food and blessing in order that they can have good affinity with the Buddha-Dharma.
  • She taught that once it is born as a worm, an ant, or an animal, it was very difficult to lead its spirit going up, so it is necessary to know that danger so that we must put effort to escape bad karma. Now we are in the human karma, we have ability to learn Dharma for liberation. There are many opportunities to get out of the reincarnation gate. But if unluckily we lose our body, we fall into the low species, it is very hard to cultivate and to get back the chance to be a human.
  • Therefore, the compassion of the Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm not only blessed human beings but was also imbued with every grass and animal species. When they felt hungry and thirsty, she gave them to food and drink. If they got cold, she gave warmful cloths. She recited Buddha's name for them so that they could create the good conditions with the Dharma from this life to the next. She declared that: "They are our brothers and sisters from many previous lives, but only because they committed a mistake that made them to be born as a dog, a cat, and a horse, so you must devotedly pray and love them."
  • Her great virtue is like an unmoving high mountain between the chaos, still bending down to protect and nourish the holy seed for her nun disciples.
  • Her concentrated power is like the immobile high mountain at eight winds. Her wisdom is as a bright moon which illuminates and destroys the darkness of rebirth life. She used many insight means to help the nuns increase their Bodhi strength on the holy path.

With a reverence for Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, whenever she met any image of Buddha or Buddhist scriptures, or monks and nuns, she paid homage at it.

  • She always wholeheartedly studied and spread the dharma. Her whole life is upholding the example for the sake of Dharma and neglecting her own needs and body.
  • She was humble, respectful, saluted monk visitors when they came to visit her. She also taught her Bhikkhuni disciples who must keep the Eight Respectful Rules throughout their lives.
  • She also required us to follow the six harmonious way of life, revered our elders, shielded the youngers, and specially considered precept-concentration-wisdom as their main career.

For the next generations, she had opened a clear and simple path of spiritual practice through her insightful lectures, wills, the book “Four Awakened Seasons”, Śūraṅgama Sūtra, and other great scriptures. This is just a guide, just a spiritual practice to remind herself and also a handbook for current and future disciples in the process of cultivating and liberating.

Where did the holy relics come from? Suvarṇa-prabhāsa Sūtra expresses that: "The relics are the crystallization from the practice of precept-concentration-wisdom. This is very difficult to attain (not for everyone), is the ultimate blessing."

With this meaning, we know that those who have the opportunity to worship and admire the relics will gain great merit. The relics will give the cultivator a spiritual chance to be closer to the Buddha, Bodhisattva, and the sacred Sangha. They, as well as the Most Venerable Hải Triều Âm, intentionally left their relics so that we have the opportunity to earn the merit, to create the inner happiness and peace to ourselves.

Dear Dharma Friends,
