2.   THE ORDINANDS REQUEST THE PRECEPTS

(One representative of the Ordinands read)

The Ordinand: Namo Shakyamuni Buddha.

Respectfully to the Venerable Abbess Master and the Venerable Sangha, and to the community. We know that we are the most fortunate people. Thanks to our blood ancestors and spiritual ancestors who have planted good seeds within us, today we have the blessed opportunity to encounter the path of mindfulness practice. This path helps us to stop and live deeply in the present moment so that we can be nourished and healed, and generate joy for ourselves and those around us. 1

The Buddha taught:

The Five Precepts are the most fundamental moral standards that a lay Buddhist vows to observe after the ceremony of Taking Refuge in the Triple Gem (Refuge in the

(Footnote: 1.Nghi thức truyền giới, Thích Nhất Hạnh. https://langmai.org/phat-duong/nghi-thuc-truyen-gioi/)

Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha). This serves as the foundation for protecting one’s moral character and ensuring a life of peace, happiness, and freedom from degeneration.

The Ten Precepts for lay practitioners (also known as the Ten Wholesome Actions) expand in greater detail upon the Five Precepts, delving deeper into purifying all three karmas: Body (actions), Speech (words), and Mind (thoughts). This is a path of cultivation that elevates moral quality and directs one toward blissful heavenly realms.

Unlike the Five Precepts or the Ten Wholesome Actions, which primarily focus on self-restraint and self-deliverance (self- directed liberation), the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts emphasize generating the expansive Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment)— simultaneously cultivating oneself while actively engaging in delivering and bringing benefits to all sentient beings (other-directed liberation). This is the highest and most sacred level of ethical discipline for a lay practitioner.

For a long time, our hearts and minds have always aspired toward the Five Precepts, the Ten Precepts, and the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts of our Original Master, just like young sprouts awaiting refreshing rain, or travelers catching sight of a lighthouse. This truly reflects the golden words of teaching from our Compassionate Buddha.

Now, the Precept Platform is solemnly purified, and the Most Venerable Bhikṣuṇīs of the Precept Council, out of your profound compassion and disregarding their countless busy Buddhist affairs, have assembled at Huong Sen Buddhist Temple to open this Precept Platform. We sincerely prostrate with our entire hearts and earnestly entreat the Most Venerable Bhikṣuṇīs to look upon us with compassion, ascend the platform, and bestow upon us the Five Precepts, the Ten Wholesome Precepts, and the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts, so that we may be deeply imbued with these boundless merits.

We know that these Precepts embody this path in a complete and concrete way. We respectfully request our Venerable Master, the Sangha, and our spiritual ancestors to accept our request and transmit the precepts to us. (bow, o)

The Precept Master Responds:

We joyfully accept your request. You are fortunate to have encountered this beautiful path and to have enough good conditions to follow it. May you all successfully receive, uphold and maintain these sacred precepts (o)

The Ordinand: We express our deep gratitude to our Venerable Masters and the Sangha for accepting our request. We will wholeheartedly follow the teachings of our Venerable Masters. (bow, o)

3.    THE INCENSE OFFERING

Therefore, the transmission of the trainings is valid and legal. As announced, is the request complete?

9.2.    PAYING HOMAGE TO THE FOUR GRATITUDES

The Upadhyaya Instructor (Giáo thọ A xà lê):

Today the Sangha has gathered to witness and support the ceremony of taking refuge in the Three Jewels for Buddhists whose names are…

May the community follow their breathing and dwell in mindfulness while listening to three sounds of the large bell. The sound of the bell is the call of the Buddha to bring everyone back to the state of mindfulness. (ooo)

The Ordinands whose names follow, please stand up and join your hands in a lotus bud before the Three Jewels (read the names). Upon hearing the words and the sound of the bell, please bow down:

•         The Ordinands, being grateful to their parents for giving them birth, bow down in deep respect to the Three Jewels ever- present in the ten directions. (o)

  • REPENTANCE

The Karma-Acarya Master (Yết ma A xà lê): Dear Ordinands, please listen attentively!

In Vinaya, it is taught: Those who take refuge in the Triple Gem must first repent so that their bodies and minds may become pure. Just as one must rinse a bottle thoroughly before filling it with sweet nectar, a person receiving the Refuges and Precepts must first practice repentance to eliminate afflictions and purify the mind. Only then can they receive the pure Refuges and Precepts.

But what is the true meaning of repentance? Sám (Ksama) means to feel contrition, to openly confess one’s faults, and to abandon the mistakes one has made—not only the wrongdoings of this single lifetime, but also those committed across many lifetimes in the past. All must be repented.

Hối means to feel remorse. It means recognizing our faults so that we can abandon them, transforming ourselves for the better, and preventing those wrongdoings from arising ever again. It is just like washing a soiled garment clean: once it is washed, we must carefully preserve it so it does not get dirty again.

Dear Ordinands, you have now clearly heard the explanation of the meaning of repentance. Therefore, please stand up, join your palms upright, and repeat exactly what I say after me, so that your bodies and minds may be purified through repentance.

The Ordinands kneel and sincerely join their palms and read after me:

My name is from time immemorial until this very day, have mistakenly created various wrongdoings.

Today, I sincerely repent. I vow to avoid all unwholesome actions and resolve to perform all good deeds. I humbly pray that the Triple Gem, in its great compassion, will protect and support me, causing my disciples’ negative karma to be eradicated, my blessings to arise, my wholesome roots to increase, and my obstacles and misfortunes to be averted. May I be adorned with blessings and wisdom in this present life, and ultimately be reborn in the land of the Buddha. (o)

The Ceremony MC (Điển lễ) chants:

With deep reverence, we prostrate. Homage to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Who Hears and Accepts Repentance. (1 prostration, o)

The Ordinands sit down to listen to the explanation of Taking Refuge.

9.4.     THE MEANING OF THE THREE REFUGES AND THE FIVE PRECEPTS

The Upadhyaya Instructor (Giáo thọ A xà lê):

Dear Ordinands, please listen attentively! Just now, you performed the repentance ritual, and your bodies and minds have become pure. Only now can you take refuge in the Triple Gem. Before taking refuge, you must understand clearly the meaning of the precepts and of taking refuge.3

The Buddha taught: A journey of ten thousand miles begins with the very first step. Therefore, to attain Buddhahood after three great countless eons (Asamkhyeya- kalpas), one must first awaken the Bodhi mind (Bodhicitta). To adorn oneself with the Six Paramitas (Perfections) and the myriad

(Footnote 3.The Ordination Ceremony for Nuns (Giới Đàn Ni), compiled and translated by Venerable Thích Minh Phát, Religious Publish- ing House, 2013, pp. 19-20.)

wholesome practices, one must rely on the precepts as the foundation.

The precepts are the foundation from which all wholesome roots and merits arise; they are the fertile ground from which all things grow. The precepts are the great path leading to the human and heavenly realms, and the sole gateway into the palace of Nirvana. If anyone wishes to end all suffering, they must receive and uphold the Three Refuges (three places of reliance) and the Five Precepts.

Zen Master Thích Nhất Hạnh has explained the Five Precepts4 as follows:

  1. The First Precept: Reverence for Life (Protection of Life)

Meaning: Cultivating compassion, aware of the suffering caused by the destruction of life. Committing to practice mindfulness to protect the lives of humans, animals, plants, and the environment of life; neither killing (Footnote 4.The Ceremony for the Transmission of the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts (Nghi thức truyền thọ Ba Quy và Năm Giới), Thích Nhất Hạnh.

https://langmai.org/tang-kinh-cac/vien-sach/thien-tap/de-co- mot-tuong-lai/chuong-5-nghi-thuc-truyen-tho-ba-quy-va-nam- gioi/)

nor allowing others to kill.

  1. The Second Precept: True Happiness (Non-stealing)

Meaning: Practicing right livelihood and sharing material resources with those in need. Committing not to take as personal property anything that does not belong to you, respecting the right to ownership of others, and preventing exploitation.

  1. The Third Precept: True Love (Respecting the Body / Sexual Responsibility)

Meaning: Protecting families and oneself, recognizing the suffering caused by sexual misconduct. Committing to practice responsibility, cultivating true love based on mutual respect, long-term commitment, and protecting the integrity of everyone.

  1. The Fourth Precept: Deep Listening and Loving Speech (Truthful Communication)

Meaning: Cultivating the capacity for truthful and constructive communication. Committing not to speak words that cause division, hatred, or untruth. Using loving speech (words that are easy to hear) to bring joy and harmony, and practicing deep listening to understand the suffering of others.

  1. The Fifth Precept: Nourishment and Healing (Non-consumption of Alcohol and Toxins)

Meaning: Aware of the damage caused by toxic substances to the body, mind, and collective consciousness. Committing to mindful consumption (of food, movies, the internet, and social media); not using alcohol, drugs, or other toxins to feed or cover up the pain and suffering within.

The practice of the Five Precepts guides human beings toward a lifestyle of peace and happiness, creating a civilized, responsible, and peaceful community.

To speak fully, “Quy y” means to take refuge in the Triple Gem (Tam Bảo). “Quy” means to return; “Y” means to rely upon—to return and rely upon the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. For countless lifetimes and eons, we have been lost in delusion and intoxication; now we must return to the True Dharma and rely on the Triple Gem.

In worldly life, relying on parents, spouses, siblings, and friends does not bring ultimate or perfect safety. Therefore, we must rely on the Buddha, who is a being of equal and boundless compassion, like a loving father. We must rely on the Dharma, which is the method to dissolve suffering, like an excellent medicine that cures diseases. We must rely on the Sangha, who are the teachers of great wisdom propagating the Dharma for the benefit of all living beings. This alone is true and complete safety.

9.4.         THE    TRANSMISSION    OF   THE THREE JEWELS

The Karma-Acarya Master (Yết ma A xà lê) teaches:

Today the Sangha has gathered to witness

and support the Buddhists whose names are…... in the ceremony of vowing to receive and practice the Three Refuges.

As those who have a deep connection with the Dharma, you have clearly seen the path of love and understanding that our ancestors have followed for many generations, and today you have mindfully made the vow to take refuge in the Three Jewels.

Taking refuge in the Three Jewels means turning back and relying on the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are three precious jewels.

Taking refuge in the Buddha means turning back and relying on the awakened one, who is capable of showing us the way in life.

Taking refuge in the Dharma means turning back and relying on the path of wisdom and compassion, which is the path of understanding and love.

Taking refuge in the Sangha means turning back and relying on the community of those who are practicing the path of wisdom and compassion and living mindfully.

The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are present in the ten directions of the world, but they are also present within every person and every species. Turning back and relying on the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha also means trusting in the capacity for awakening within our own nature, in the capacity to unfold and develop understanding and love within ourselves, and in the capacity to practice the path as individuals and as a community.

May the Ordinands respectfully repeat these three great vows from the Odination Master (Hòa thượng đầu đàn).

The Leading Odination Master (Hòa thượng đầu đàn):

My name is…... I vow for the rest of our lives to take refuge in the Buddha, the one who shows me the way in this life. (o)

My name is…... I vow for the rest of our lives to take refuge in the Dharma, the path of love and understanding. (o)

My name is…... I vow for the rest of our lives to take refuge in the Sangha, the community of those who vow to live a life of mindfulness. (ooo)

My name is……., I took refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha already.

Having taken refuge in the Buddha, we are free from falling into the realm of Hell.

Having taken refuge in the Dharma, we are free from falling into the realm of Hungry Ghosts.

Having taken refuge in the Sangha, we are free from falling into the realm of Animals. (ooo)

9.5.  THE TRANSMISSION OF THE FIVE PRECEPTS

The Odination Master (Hòa thượng đầu đàn):

Dear Ordinands, please listen attentively! Previously, the Three Refuges in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha were transmitted to you, and the essence of the refuges has been perfectly fulfilled.

Now, I will transmit the signs of the Five

Precepts5 to you. You must focus with a sincere heart, listen carefully, and receive them.

(Footnote 5.The Ordination Ceremony for Nuns (Giới Đàn Ni), compiled and translated by Venerable Thích Minh Phát, Religious Publish- ing House, 2013, pages 20-28.)

However, you must first examine and decide for yourselves: if there is a precept you can uphold, when I ask, you should reply loudly, “Yes, I can.”

If there is a precept you cannot uphold, remain silent. You should measure your own capacity and receive as many precepts as you can; you are not forced to receive all five.

Please Ordinands kneel upright, sincerely join palms, and listen.

1. The First Precept: From now until the end of your life, do not kill living beings. Vow to cultivate compassion in order to protect the lives of humans, animals, plants, and the environment of life. This is a precept for lay Buddhists; can you uphold it? (o)

Response: “Yes, I can.” (o)

2.  The Second Precept: From now until the end of your life, do not engage in stealing or greed. Vow to share your time, energy, and material resources with those in need.

(Footnote 6.The Ceremony for Transmitting the Three Refuges and Five Pre- cepts, Thích Nhất Hạnh.)

This is a precept for lay Buddhists; can you uphold it? (o)

Response: “Yes, I can.” (o)

3.  The Second Precept: From now until the end of your life, do not engage in sexual misconduct. Vow to protect the integrity and safety of individuals, families, and society. This is a precept for lay Buddhists; can you uphold it? (o)

Response: “Yes, I can.” (o)

4.     The Fourth Precept: From now until the end of your life, do not speak untruths. Vow to learn the practices of Loving Speech and Deep Listening to offer joy to others, alleviate their suffering, and help bring peace and reconciliation among individuals, nations, races, and religions. This is a precept for lay Buddhists; can you uphold it? (o)

Response: “Yes, I can.” (o)

5.    The Fifth Precept: From now until the end of your life, do not consume alcohol, drugs, or ingest/consume any products that contain toxins. This is a precept for lay Buddhists; can you uphold it? (o) Response: “Yes, I can.” (o)

The Upadhyaya Instructor (Giáo thọ A xà lê):

Dear Ordinands! You have officially received the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts. You now officially hold your Buddhist names, which means our wishes that your life will be as beautiful as the virtues your Buddhist names represent.

Today, you have become disciples of the Buddha and all Awakened Ones, having vowed to live according to His mindful way of life. Starting from today, you must mindfully learn and practice daily according to the path of wisdom and compassion, which means developing your capacity for understanding and love.

Also starting today, you must learn to rely on your local community or nearby temple to uphold the Five Precepts and join retreats, allowing you to cultivate your role as model, moral Buddhists. Congratulation!

By the merit of keeping these precepts, you will avoid falling into the three evil paths, and at the end of this life, you will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss if you mindfully recite the Buddha’s name with one-pointed mind.

You have now completed receiving the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts. Please stand up together to bow in gratitude to the Triple Gem. (o)

The Ceremony MC (Điển lễ) chants:

With deep reverence, we prostrate the eternally present Triple Gem—the Buddhas, the Dharma, and the Sangha— throughout all space, the entire cosmos, and the past, present, and future. (1 prostration, o).

10. TRANSMITTING CEREMONY OF THE TEN PRECEPTS

The Karma-Acarya Master (Yết ma A xà lê):

Dear Ordinands, you should know that at this very moment, the Heavenly Beings, Dragons, Eight Classes of Supernatural Beings, and Dharma-Protecting Benevolent Deities fill the entire space. They are joyfully praising you, saying:

‘In this Saha world, there are people who are steering clear of the ten unwholesome deeds to step onto the path of the ten wholesome deeds, bypassing the evil realms to reach the blissful realms of humans and heavenly beings.’

You should know that all Buddhas and Great Bodhisattvas throughout the infinite worlds of the ten directions are radiating boundless light—light of great wisdom, great compassion, great vows, and infinite Paramitas. They joyfully praise you, saying:

‘Presently in this Jambudvipa world, there are Buddhists who have just planted the seeds of the Bodhicitta Precepts, vowing to study and practice the Paramita deeds of a Bodhisattva, and who will be born into the family of the Tathagatas.’ Therefore, receive them with the utmost reverence and respect.

Dear Buddhists! With a single-minded and pure heart, face toward the Buddhas and Great Bodhisattvas of the ten directions across infinite worlds, and repeat after me to receive and uphold the ten wholesome deeds.

The Odination Master reads first, and the recipients repeat after her.

These Precept Recipients today request us, whose names are (ten Precepts Masters), to follow the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to receive the Three Clusters of Pure Precepts (Tam tụ tịnh giới).

These recipients are capable of generating deep faith in the profound and wonderful meaning of the Mahāyāna teachings. We pray that the Triple Gem will extend its compassionate heart and bestow the Three Clusters of Pure Bodhisattva Precepts (Tam tụ tịnh giới) upon these recipients.

Such training rules and pure precepts were

studied by all past Bodhisattvas, will be studied by all future Bodhisattvas,   and are currently being studied by all present Bodhisattvas. Are you able to receive and uphold them?

•         I, Dharma name is..., with all my heart, make these vows:

Sentient beings are numberless, I vow to deliver them.

Namo Samantabhadra Bodhisattva Mahasattva. (1 bow, o)

11.5.          PETITIONING THE TRIPLE GEM TO BEAR WITNESS:

The Upadhyaya Instructor (Giáo thọ A xà lê):

Dear Buddhists! Now that you have made these vast vows, I shall formally petition the Triple Gem on your behalf to witness your reception of the precepts. Therefore, you must listen single-mindedly and reflect deeply.

You should know that upon the completion of the first Formal Legal Acts of the Sangha (Karma- vacana: pháp yết ma), the wholesome precept-energy across the worlds of the ten directions will be stirred by the power of your mental karma.

Upon the second Formal Legal Acts of the Sangha, the wholesome precept-energy across the ten directions will gather above you like clouds and a canopy covering your heads.

Upon the third Formal Legal Acts of the Sangha, the wholesome precept-energy across the ten directions will flow from the crowns of your heads into your minds and bodies, completely filling your direct retribution, and it will remain forever as the seed of Buddhahood until the end of your future lives.

This is the unmanifest precept-body (uncontrived moral essence) and untainted form-energy, obtained through the extraordinary response of your supreme wholesome minds. Therefore, you must bow your heads with total sincerity to receive it. (The precept recipients remain kneeling as before).

11.6.           PROCLAIMING THE SIX MAJOR PRECEPTS

The    Leading    Odination    Master    (Hòa thượng đầu đàn) instructs:

Dear Ordinands!

Monastic Bodhisattvas have 10 Major Precepts of the Inexhaustible Treasury and 48 Minor Precepts, but as lay practitioners, you have only 6 Major Precepts and 28 Minor Precepts.

The masters will transmit and ask about the 6 precepts, so you must listen mindfully to receive and uphold them:

1.    From this body until the attainment of Buddhahood, during this interval, you must not intentionally kill sentient beings. Are you able to keep this precept?

Answer: Yes, I am are able to keep it. (o)

2.    From this body until the attainment of Buddhahood, during this interval, you must not intentionally steal. Are you able to keep this precept?

Answer: Yes, I am able to keep it. (o)

3.    From this body until the attainment of Buddhahood, during this interval, you must not intentionally engage in sexual misconduct (for lay practitioners, sexual misconduct is strictly forbidden). Are you able to keep this precept?

Answer: Yes, I am able to keep it. (o)

4.    From this body until the attainment of Buddhahood, during this interval, you must not intentionally lie. Are you able to keep this precept?

Answer: Yes, I am able to keep it. (o)

5.    From this body until the attainment of Buddhahood, during this interval, you must not intentionally sell alcohol or drink alcohol. Are you able to keep this precept?

Answer: Yes, I am able to keep it. (o)

6.    From this body until the attainment of Buddhahood, during this interval, you must not intentionally speak of the faults of lay practitioners and monastic practitioners. Are you able to keep this precept?

Answer: Yes, I am able to keep it. (o)

The Honored and Virtuous Monastics have now bestowed the 6 Major Precepts upon you. As for the remaining 28 Minor Precepts, you must study them in order to understand how to keep them pure.

Now that you have received the 6 Bodhisattva Precepts, you will transcend the four Maras (temptations/delusions) and step out of the three realms, carrying this from life to life until you attain Buddhahood. The merit and virtue are truly boundless, so you must strive to uphold and practice them.

Ordinands answer: “We shall follow and fulfill these teachings.” (o)

The Ceremony MC (Điển lễ) announces:

The ceremony for receiving the Five Precepts, the Ten Precepts (Good Deeds), and the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts is now completed. We thank all our Precepts Masters and Buddhists for helping us to do it serenely. Please recipients stand up to prostrate.

With one heart, we pay homage to the permanently abiding Triple Gem across the past, present, and future throughout the entirety of space and the Dharma Realm: all Buddhas, the Honored Dharma, and the Sage Sangha. (1 prostration, o)

12.   THE INSIGHT THAT BRINGS US TO THE OTHER SHORE

The Heart of Prajnaparamita (Perfect Wisdom)

Avalokiteshvara while practicing deeply with the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore, suddenly discovered that all of the five Skandhas are equally empty, and with this realization he overcame all Ill-being (suffering). (o)

Listen Sariputra, this Body itself is Emptiness and Emptiness itself is this Body. This Body is not other than Emptiness and Emptiness is not other than this Body. The same is true of Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations, and Consciousness. (o)

Listen Sariputra, all phenomena bear the mark of Emptiness; their true nature is the nature of neither Birth nor Death, neither Being nor Non- being, neither Defilement nor Purity, neither Increasing nor Decreasing.

That is why in Emptiness, Body, Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations and Consciousness are not separate self-entities. The Eighteen Realms of Phenomena which are the six Sense Organs, six Sense Objects, and six Consciousnesses are also not separate self- entities. (o)

The Twelve Links of Interdependent Arising and their Extinction are also not separate self-entities. Ill-being, the Causes of Ill-being, the End of Ill-being, the Path, insight and attainment, are also not separate self-entities. Whoever can see this no longer needs anything to attain. (o)

Bodhisattvas who practice the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore see no more obstacles in their mind, and because there are no more obstacles in their mind, they can overcome all fear, destroy all wrong perceptions and realize Perfect Nirvana. All Buddhas in the past, present and future by practicing the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore, are all capable of attaining Authentic and Perfect Enlightenment. (o)

Therefore, Sariputra, it should be known that the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore is a Great Mantra, the most illuminating mantra, the highest mantra, a mantra beyond compare, the True Wisdom that has the power to put an end to all kinds of suffering. (o)

Therefore, let us proclaim a mantra. To praise the Insight that Brings Us to the Other Shore. Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone to the other shore, awake, rejoice! (3 times) (o)

Namo the Great Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.

(3 times) (ooo)

13.   READ THE NAMES OF BUDDHAS AND BODHISATTVAS

The river of attachment is ten thousand miles long.

The waves on the ocean of confusion stretch so far.

If you wish to go beyond the realms of samsara,

Recollect the Buddha with one pointed mind. (o)

In every minute and every second, may the day and night be well.

By the blessing of the Triple Gem, may all things be protected and safe.

May all beings born in each of the four ways live in a land of purity.

May all in the Three Realms be born upon Lotus Thrones.

May countless wandering souls realize

The three virtuous positions

of the Bodhisattva Path.

May all living beings, with grace and ease, fulfill the Bodhisattva Stages.

The countenance of the World-Honored One, like the full moon

Or like the orb of the sun, shines with the light of clarity.

A halo of wisdom spreads in every direction,

Enveloping all with love and compassion, joy and equanimity.

Namo Shakyamunaye Buddhaya. (3 times) (ooo)

15.   SALUTATION THOUSANDS BUDDHAS IN THREE TIMES

There are many the great causes

The ten directions, three lives and realms I keep my body and mind pure

Pay homage at all without being left behind. (o)

We pay respects sincerely to the four graces of the three realms:

Namo the Buddhas of the kalpa thousands in the past. (o) (1 prostration)

Namo the Buddhas of the kalpa thousands in the present. (o) (1 prostration)

Namo the Buddhas of the kalpa thousands in the future. (o) (1 prostration)

16.   TAKING REFUGE AT THREE JEWELS

I take refuge in the Buddha,

the one who shows me the way in this life. I take refuge in the Dharma,

the way of understanding and of love. I take refuge in the Sangha,

the community that lives in harmony and awareness. (o) (1 prostration)

Dwelling in the refuge of Buddha,

I clearly see the path of light and beauty in the world.

Dwelling in the refuge of Dharma,

I learn to open many doors on the path of transformation.

Dwelling in the refuge of Sangha,

shining light that supports me, keeping my practice free of obstruction. (o) (1 prostration)

Taking refuge in the Buddha in myself,

I aspire to help all people recognize their own awakened nature,

realizing the Mind of Love.

Taking refuge in the Dharma in myself,

I aspire to help all people fully master the ways of practice

and walk together on the path of liberation. Taking refuge in the Sangha in myself,

I aspire to help all people build Fourfold Communities,

to embrace all beings and support their transformation. (ooo) (1 prostration)

17.   SHARING THE MERIT & VERSE FOR CLOSING

Reciting the Vinaya, practicing the way of awareness

Gives rise to benefits without limit.

We vow to share the fruits with all beings.

We vow to offer tribute to parents, teachers, friends,

And numerous beings who give guidance and support along the path. (o)

May we be born now in the Pure Land Within the heart of a lotus flower.

In the moment when the lotus blooms,

We touch the reality of no-birth and no- dying.

May Buddhas and Bodhisattvas be our companions

On the wonderful path of practice. (o)

May    we    end    all    afflictions   so    that understanding can arise,

The   obstacles   of   unwholesome   acts   be dissolved,

And the fruit of awakening be fully realized. (o)

Namo Amitabha Buddhaya. (3 times) (ooo)

18.   THE DIVINE GATHA

Gods, nagas, asuras and yakshas

Come here, with all your heart listen to the Dharma.

Protect the Buddha-dharma so that it may endure

And all may act in the spirit of the Buddha’s teaching.

When you have come to hear the Dharma,

Whether you are under the earth or in the sky,

Look at all beings with the eyes of love.

Day and night abide in the right practice.

May the world always be safe and secure,

Impregnated by the merit of wisdom and love.

May all the obstacles of wrong doing be dissolved.

May we live behind afflictions and know

Always how to touch peace and joy.

May    the    Sangha    with    determination observe the precepts,

Be diligent in the practice of meditative concentration.

May the flower of awakened understanding bloom beautifully

And   everywhere   may   all   species   have happiness.

Namo the Dharma Protective Bodhisattva Mahasattva. (3 times) (ooo)

19.   EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE TO THE VENERABLE PRECEPT COUNCIL

(By Lay Precept-Candidates for the Five, Ten, and Bodhisattva Precepts)

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa. (Homage to the Original Master Sakyamuni Buddha)

With utmost reverence, we bow to the Most Venerable Abbess and Venerable Bhikṣuṇīs of the Precept Council.

Respected Masters,

Our Buddhist names are…., representing all the precept-candidates seeking the Five Precepts, the Ten Wholesome Precepts, and the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts today. We sincerely prostrate and bow our heads before you.

Respected Masters,

We recognize ourselves as ordinary beings caught in the changing tides of worldly life, carrying heavy karmic obstacles. Yet, by the boundless grace of the Triple Gem, and especially through the profound compassion and loving-kindness you hold for lay practitioners, you have disregarded the long distances and traveled to Huong Sen Temple. Out of your great mercy, you have ascended the platform to bestow the sacred precepts upon us.

At this very moment, a truly sacred hour when our precept-essence (giới thể) has been perfectly fulfilled and the noble precepts have been completely transmitted, our hearts are overflowing with joy and overwhelmed with deep emotion.

The torch of wisdom ignites,

Illuminating the path back to the shore of enlightenment,

The deep grace of bestowing the precepts is forever engraved

In the hearts of Buddha’s disciples.

Before the solemn main sanctuary, looking up at the compassionate countenances of the Venerable Precept Council, we sincerely make this vow:

Throughout our lives, we shall purify our conduct, meticulously guard the purity of the precept-essence we have just received, and strive to be good citizens and genuine Buddhists.

We vow to dedicate our entire minds and strength to living an ethical life and protecting the Triple Gem so it may long endure in this world, thereby repaying in some small measure the profound grace of the Buddhas of the ten directions and the Venerable Precept Council.

Now, with an immense sense of reverence and gratitude that words cannot fully express, we have prepared humble offerings of pure materials and financial contributions (tịnh tài, tịnh vật) to offer to the Venerable Precept Council. We respectfully pray that you will look upon us with compassion, accept these gifts, and allow us, your lay disciples, to plant seeds in this field of merit and be deeply imbued with these boundless blessings.

We respectfully pray that the Triple Gem of the ten directions will bless the Most Venerable Abbess and Venerable Bhikṣuṇīs of the Precept Council with physical ease, longevity in the Dharma, and ever-shining wisdom. May you always stand as grand, sheltering trees, guiding and protecting us on our path of learning the Dharma and serving humanity.

Namo Witnessing Bodhisattva Mahasattva. (o)

Wait for the Venerable Precept Council to give words of instruction (Đạo từ):

The Vinaya taught:

Those who strictly and purely observe the Five Precepts: Will enjoy a present life of family happiness and peace, and in the future, will certainly be reborn as a wholesome and complete human being.

Those who strictly and purely observe the Ten Wholesome Precepts: Will experience peace of body and mind in this life, smooth family affairs, and their future retribution body will be reborn into the heavenly realms to enjoy pure blessings.

Those who strictly, purely receive and uphold the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts (Six Major Precepts and Twenty-Eight Minor Precepts): Will continuously expand their own minds and those of others, give rise to great compassion, and actively engage in serving and helping others to together build a moral and peaceful society.

May all of you perfectly preserve and guard your newly received precept-essence.

Then the Representative continues:

The Most Venerable Abbess and Venerable Bhikṣuṇīs of the Precept Council have compassionately accepted our offerings and bestowed upon us your precious words of Dharma instruction. We, your disciples, sincerely vow to faithfully follow and put your teachings into practice.

All Candidates recite together: We vow to faithfully follow and practice your teachings. (o)

Now, we bow our heads to make three prostrations of gratitude to the Venerable Precept Council. (3 prostrations, ooo)

20.   PRESENT THE CERTIFICATES AND BOOKS TO ORDINANDS

The organizing committee will quickly distribute the Precept Certificates and Buddhist books/scriptures to the Buddhists.

Afterwards, everyone will be invited to turn around and hold up their Precept Certificates for a commemorative group photograph.
